Northport journalist and author, Delbert Reed worked for The Tuscaloosa News approximately 20 years as sports writer, sports editor, city editor and columnist. He also worked for the Nashville Banner and Columbus (MS) Dispatch and has contributed columns to the Northport Gazette since 1998 in a journalism career spanning more than half a century. Reed has held several other positions in marketing and public relations, including 12 years as manager and marketing director for McFarland Mall and as manager and marketing director for McFarland Mall and as writer in residence at the Paul W. Bryant Museum at the University of Alabama 2009-2013. Reed has written five books, with his latest being “Mike Denny: The Shadow of a Single Man,” which will be the subject of his talk to the Rotary Club. The book recounts the educational career of Dr. George H. Denny, who was president of the University 1912-1936 and served as active chancellor for an additional 15 years. Reed’s other books include “When Winning Was Everything: Alabama Football Players in WWII,” “All of Us Fought the War: The University of Alabama and Its Men and Women in World War II,” “Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant: What Made Him a Winner” and “Delbert Reed & Friends.” Reed holds a master’s degree from the University of Alabama and has won several writing awards, including first-place awards in Alabama and Mississippi and both first and second-place national awards.
